The main failure with the Align clutch liner & many other clutch liners that have come & gone on the market is that they are basically cut from a common automotive gasket material based on Aramid glass composites. Unfortunately it is a misconception that the clutch liner was specifically developed for RC Helicopter use & I can assure you that this is not the case due to the high Research, Development & Manufacturing cost for such a small quantity of items.

The Aramid (Kevlar) glass fibres used within the composite sheet materials to date have a reasonable but not high tensile strength at around 2760 Mpa. The Problem lies with the bonding agents & fillers. After research & consultancy with Materials engineers it was found that one of the main filling & bonding agents that was at the start of the failure chain was basically a clay. Given enough heat in the form of friction we induced slipping, turn the heat up a few notches & we obtained flaking & disintegration that is a common sign with this type of material in high heat failure. It should also be noted that these materials where originally developed for a specific use i.e. to provide a pressure & fluid seal sandwiched between two metal surfaces at a specific temperature range. The manufacture can’t be held responsible for failure of product outside the general scope & intended use of that product.

The solution to finding a suitable gasser clutch liner was to look outside of the common automotive & general products industries & towards the specialist & aerospace industries. These materials do not come cheap & are not easily or readily available. After studying properties & testing many materials from the various manufactures a suitable product has been found & testing to date has been extremely favourable & beyond expectations.

The above photographs are from the same control testing platform. Everything is consistent including atmosheric conditions +/- 2 degress celsius.  The clutch was dismantled, inspected & photographed at the Align liner failure point of 1000 minutes flight time. Shoes are clean & bog free eliminating clutch slip conditions. At 1000 minutes flight time there is hardly any measurable wear. There is a little uneven wear at the base which was due to worn bearings within the clutch holder.  Wear is turning into a fine dust which clears the clutch system quickly.
